Sk\u00e1lholt is one of the most historic places in Iceland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was an episcopal see, a school, a seat of learning and administration for more than 700 years and a place of pilgrimage in medieval times. Sk\u00e1lholt of our time is more than history. It is a place of culture, spirituality and music run by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland, ELCI, \u2013 and open for all. It is the site of a deputy bishop and a local parish pastor . Besides services every Sunday, there are morning and evening prayers on weekdays. In Sk\u00e1lholt there are frequent cultural, educational and artistic events and retreats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The present Cathedral was consecrated in 1963 and is the 10th church standing on exactly the same site. It is decorated with valuable art, both old and new. In the crypt there is a small exhibition from the National Museum with items excavated in Sk\u00e1lholt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cathedral is also renowned for its Summer Music Festival starting in 1975 and attracting many skilled musicians and lots of music lovers. Besides, many choirs, Icelandic and foreign visit Sk\u00e1lholt to perform in the Cathedral because of its excellent acoustics and artistic surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Sk\u00e1lholt Center (Sk\u00e1lholtssk\u00f3li) is a cultural and educational center and offers excellent facilities for seminars, and cultural tourism. It is also a place for retreats, sometimes silent, during the peaceful winter time.
